People often regard backup as something you do at work. The reality of this is that backup is not just for your business, it is also an important tool for you home, now more than ever!

Even if you have the latest virus scanners, firewalls, and other high security measures, you can never account for natural causes. You never know how you could accidentally lose all your information, a power surge, a lightning strike, a flood, a child hitting the keyboard like a piano or even theft!

You should backup important data of yours at least once every month. Set up reminders or an automated backup to make sure you don’t forget! Useful things to backup can include: Your e-mail address book, your tasks and calendars, bank records and important documents, photos and software you downloaded from the internet.

Backup comes in many shapes and sizes, choose the best one that suits you.

CDs

The easiest and most accessible tool for backup is CD. CD writers are cheap, CD-R or CD-RW blanks are cheap, but you only get 700mb of data on them. Great if you don’t have too much to backup, or only do a little, often.

DVDs

DVDs are the upgrade to CDs as they hold 4.7GB of data (over 6 CDs) but are more expensive than CDs. You can also get re-writeable versions but again, it is more expensive. Good if you want to backup a lot of your data each time.

External Hard Drive

You can get external hard drives to store many gigabytes of data at one time. Just plug them in and copy the data across. A one time payment, but not as portable as regular CDs or DVDs.

Zip or Flash Drives

Portable USB storage drives that are just like hard drives that fit in your pocket! Easy enough to set up, but may be slower than other options. Easy to store away and simple to use.

Online Storage

Not recommended for important and private documents, but great for small files and photos. Only problem is if you have a slow internet connection, or if the servers are down.

Lastly, it is important that you keep your backups outside of the house. If your house was to catch on fire, or become flooded, you would lose both you computer and your backup!

If you are unsure on which kind of backup is best for you, or you don’t know how to set up regular backup, talk to your local Computer Troubleshooter, they’ll know what to do!
